Authorities have said that a cargo ship off the Greek island of Corfu, believed to be carrying hundreds of migrants, sent out a distress signal on Tuesday.
Reuters noted that a Greek television station said the distress signal was issued regarding people with weapons aboard the ship.
The Moldovan-flagged Blue Sky M, which had been sailing in poor weather conditions, is suspected of carrying anywhere from 400 to 700 migrants.
“We have information that it is carrying suspected migrants. It is sailing off Corfu,” a shipping ministry official said.
USA Today reported that Greece has sent a navy frigate and helicopter to locate the ship in response to the SOS.
This incident comes after a passenger ferry with over 400 passengers and 200 vehicles caught fire on Sunday and led to a huge rescue operation from authorities in both Greece and Italy. While most of the hundreds of passengers have since been rescued, 10 people lost their lives. The search for any other potential missing passengers is ongoing.
