Steve Carell's 'Pyongyang' movie, directed by Gore Verbinski, cancelled in wake of Sony hack

After seeing the response of one studio’s North Korea movie, New Regency has decided to cancel its own. Pyongyang, a film set to star Steve Carell and directed by Rango’s Gore Verbinski, has been cancelled.

Insiders told Deadline that it was just determined that, considering what has happened over at Sony, it just wasn’t a good idea to keep it alive. New Regency declined to consider moving the thriller’s setting to another location.

According to TheWrap, the film was based on a graphic novel by Guy Delisle and showed a year in the life of a Westerner working in the isolated communist state.

The script was written by Steve Conrad, who also worked on Verbinski’s The Weather Man.

Verbinski is best known for helming the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films and The Lone Ranger. His animated film, Rango, won an Oscar. New Regency does have a multi-year deal with the director, who already has two other projects ready to move ahead with in place of Pyongyang.

As for Carell, he’s about to go on the awards circuit for Foxcatcher. He also starred in Disney’s Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day this year.

As for Sony, the studio’s The Interview has been pulled from all five major theater chains in North America after the hackers’ latest message included threats to theaters that showed it.
