'Star Trek 3' directed by Justin Lin flies into theaters in July 2016

As the calendar turns to 2015, Hollywood already has its eyes set on 2016, especially Paramount. The studio has scheduled Star Trek 3 for July 2016.

The film will bring the U.S.S. Enterprise and her crew back into theaters on July 8, 2016, according to Box Office Mojo’s schedule. That’s a week after Warner Bros. Tarzan and Steven Spielberg’s The BFG adaptation hit theaters. It’s also just a week before Universal’s next Bourne movie opens. Clearly, Hollywood hasn’t learned the overall danger of packing blockbuster after blockbuster into theaters at the same time.

Trek 3’s scheduling comes just days after former Fast and Furious director Justin Lin was hired to replace Roberto Orci as director. He was among the studio’s top names for the job, but was the only one offered the position, according to Deadline.

The new film is actually the 13th overall film in the Gene Roddenberry-created franchise, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2016. However, it is the third in the rebooted franchise J.J. Abrams started with 2009’s hugely successful Star Trek. He followed that in 2012 with the less-than-stellar Star Trek Into Darkness.

Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana are expected to return for the new movie.

Lin is currently filming the first episodes of True Detective's second season. He was set to make a sequel to The Bourne Legacy, but that's been delayed by Universal since Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass want to make another film in that series.
