Sports Year in Review: Top 10 sports stories of 2014

6. Michael Sam gets drafted

The 2014 NFL Draft in May had a historic moment in the seventh round when the St. Louis Rams drafted Michael Sam. The former Missouri Tigers lineman came out as gay before the draft and when he was selected by the Rams, football fans witnessed an emotional Sam getting the call. The 2013 SEC Defensive Player of the Year did not make the 53-man roster and was later picked up by the Dallas Cowboys but waived off the practice squad. Even if another team doesn’t sign Sam, he will always have a place in history as the first openly gay player to ever be drafted in the NFL. And, perhaps that will have a major impact on the sport even if he never steps on the field again.
