Sony considered working with Marvel on Spider-Man projects

Among many of the thousands of documents leaked by hackers from Sony is an email exchange that details how the studio planned to work with Disney and Marvel Studios on the Spider-Man franchise.

The emails involved Sony Pictures president Doug Belgrad and Sony motion picture chief Amy Pascal, who discussed a plan in late October to work with their rivals on new Spider-Man ideas. According to The Wall Street Journal, the discussion with Disney went all the way to Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony CEO Kaz Hirai.

Belgrad told Pascal in an Oct. 30 email that they could allow Marvel to make a new Spider-Man trilogy in exchange for giving Sony “creative control, marketing and distribution.” Another idea from Pascal had Spider-Man making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in Captain America: Civil War.

Coincidentally, back in early October, there was a report from HitFix that claimed that Sony had been talking to Marvel. The site suggested that Marvel and Disney had a better relationship with Sony than with Fox, which has the screen rights to the X-Men and Fantastic Four.

The WSJ isn’t clear about what broke down the talks between the two sides, but that had planned a “Spidey Summit” in January to discuss ideas.

The emails also revealed that LEGO Movie team Phil Lord and Chris Miller are working on a Spider-Man animated comedy. It’s not clear if this is a TV show or a full feature.

It’s clear that Sony considered working with Marvel after The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed with fans and critics.
