Warner Bros. dropped some major news late Tuesday by confirming the cast for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad. However, casting still isn’t done and it has been reported that an even bigger name might join the line-up.
The studio has already confirmed that Jared Leto will star as The Joker, with Will smith as Deadshot. Tom Hardy was cast as Rick Flagg, Jai Courtney is Boomerang and Cara Delevingne is the Enchantress. Smith’s Focus co-star, Margot Robbie, is Harley Quinn.
In Variety’s report on the cast, the trade said the studio still has to cast Amanda Waller, the character who puts the team of supervillains together. Sources for Variety say that Selma producer Oprah Winfrey is the studio’s top pick. Oscar winner Octavia Spencer and Oscar nominee Viola Davis are also on the list.
While it sounds odd for Winfrey to be linked to a superhero project, it would just be the next step in the former talk show host’s return to the movies after leading television. She made a comeback in Lee Daniels’ The Butler and appears in this year’s Selma. She’s also a producer on Selma, which is expected to be in the running for Oscars.
Variety’s sources also say that Jesse Eisenberg is in talks with Warner Bros. to play Lex Luthor. He plays the character first in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
Suicide Squad opens on Aug. 5, 2016 and will be directed by Ayer.
