Steven Spielberg’s The BFG now has its Sophie. Newcomer Ruby Barnhill will play the part in DreamWorks’ take on Roald Dahl’s classic.
Deadline reported that this is the 10-year-old’s first feature film role. She will share the screen with Mark Rylance, who will play the Big Friendly Giant that the title refers to.
As Variety noted, Barnhill’s casting was the result of a long search. Spielberg spoke highly of the young actress in a statement.
“I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvelous as we do,” Spielberg said.
The story of The BFG details the friendship between the orphan Sophie and a Big Friendly Giant. According to Entertainment Weekly, the original book was Dahl’s favorite of his own work. E.T. screenwriter Melissa Mathison wrote the script. The story was previously brought to screen as an animated TV movie back in 1989.
Production on the film will begin in 2015, with a July 1, 2016 release date currently planned.
