'Interstellar,' 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' 'Transformers' and 'Hobbit' on shortlist for Visual Effects Oscar

The shortlist for the one Oscar that many of this year’s most popular films have an actual chance of winning was revealed today. Interstellar, Godzilla, Guardians of the Galaxy and Maleficent remain in the running for the Best Visual Effects Oscar.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences had members of the Visual Effects branch Executive Committee cut down the list of potential nominees to 10. All members of the branch will now get to watch 10-minute clips from each film to refresh their memories on Jan. 10. Then, they decide which five will wind up getting official nominations.

In addition to Guardians, Marvel’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier also remains in contention. The other films on the list are Fox’s X-Men: Days of Future Past, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb; Warner Bros.’ The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five armies; and Paramount’s Transformers: Age of Extinction.

The only film in the bunch that has a legitimate shot at getting a Best Picture nomination is Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, which should bode well for its chances in the category. Since 2008, the winner of the VFX Oscar was also nominated for Best Picture. That includes Life Of Pi, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Nolan’s Inception and Hugo. Last year’s winner, Gravity, was also nominated for Best Picture.

Oscar nominees are announced on Jan. 15 and the awards are handed out on Feb. 22 on ABC at the Dolby Theatre at the Hollywood & Highland Center.
