'Exodus: Gods and Kings' tops 'Mockingjay' at box office with disappointing debut

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I finally met its match, but Exodus: Gods and Kings didn’t exactly set the box office on fire. Instead, the Biblical epic failed to even meet modest expectations.

There was some hope that Ridley Scott’s Exodus might reach as much as $30 million, but it only earned $24.5 million. Considering that it was screened at 3,503 locations, that’s a major disappointment. It failed to match Noah’s $43.7 million opening earlier this year, despite star power from Christian Bale.

The good news for Fox is that films usually play longer during the holiday season and the film has massive international appeal thanks to its story and stars. However, the film will likely be hurt in the long term by negative reviews. It only has a 28 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.

Mockingjay came in second with $13.2 million, according to Rentrak estimates. The film is already up to $277.4 million domestically. Add in the $334 million made from overseas and the film is up to $611.4 million worldwide.

Penguins of Madagascar fell to third with just $7.3 million. The DreamWorks Animation film is up to $58.8 million.

Chris Rock’s Top Five had a relatively impressive opening with $7.2 million from 979 locations. Paramount is planning to increase the theater count over the next couple of weeks.

Disney’s Big Hero 6 rounded out the top 5 with $6.1 million, bringing its domestic total to $185.3 million. Interstellar added $5.5 million, so its domestic total is up to $166.8 million.

Wild with Reese Witherspoon snuck into the Top 10 this week with $1.5 million from just 116 locations.
