A baggage handler, who worked for Delta Airlines at Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, has been charged with allegedly helping a former employee smuggle firearms onto a flight to New York City.
The Associated Press reported that Eugene Harvey, 31, is accused of assisting former airline worker, Mark Henry, in getting the weapons onto passenger planes.
Authorities said Henry was arrested at JFK Airport in New York earlier this month with 18 handguns inside a backpack. Cell phone records and surveillance video allegedly showed that he conspired with Harvey to get the guns past security.
Police later took the baggage handler into custody at his home near Atlanta and charged him with trafficking firearms and entering an airport area in violation of security requirements.
Reuters noted that Delta spokeswoman Morgan Durrant said on Tuesday that Harvey’s employment with the company has been terminated and the airline is cooperating with the investigation.
"Delta is cooperating with authorities in this investigation," she said. "We take seriously any activity that fails to uphold our strict commitment to the safety and security of our customers and employees."
