Universal is getting into the Marvel game with an upcoming shared universe of monster movies, as we previously reported. We now have gotten confirmation about what one of the first rebooted films will be.
According to Slashfilm, Universal Studios will be rebooting The Wolf Man as part of their shared universe franchise. Aaron Guzikowski, writer of Prisoners, is in talks to work on the script. No director or actors are currently attached to the project.
We previously reported that Universal recently scheduled an unknown monster movie for 2017. While it hasn't been confirmed, it seems like a safe bet that this is probably where The Wolf Man will go, with a release date of April 21, 2017.
Universal's shared universe franchise will kick off with the Mummy reboot in 2016. The idea is to have a series of monster movie reboots all within the shared universe like Marvel, so the characters can theoretically cross over and meet up in future movies. This is similar to how Universal handled their classic monster movies, with a bunch of individual movies that would sometimes cross over into films like Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man.
Technically the Universal shared universe actually started last month with Dracula Untold. That movie was originally not part of the shared universe, but at the last minute an epilogue was shot to make the movie fit in to the larger franchise, according to Screen Rant.
Dracula Untold wasn't a huge success domestically, grossing $55 million, but it did well enough oversees for the movie to be a moderate success.
