As the last war epic made in black and white, Otto Preminger focused his attention on the Navy. Here, John Wayne plays a commander tested by Pearl Harbor and the private lives of his underlings, plus his own affairs. This is a surprisingly good film, again, thanks to the performances (Kirk Douglas is really great in this) that keep it moving.
