5. The Deer Hunter - Michael Cimino, 1978
You either hate The Deer Hunter or like it, and I happen to like it. It is truly too long a film, but director Michael Cimino has too many ideas to bottle up in a two-hour movie, so he pushes past three. Of course, the story of Pennsylvania friends’ lives being smashed by the war doesn’t work without some incredible performances from Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, John Cazale and Meryl Streep.
