10. Glory - Edward Zwick, 1989
Since Veterans Day honors all men and women who served in the military for the U.S., I can definitely include Edward Zwick’s great contribution to American cinema, Glory. Easily one of the best Civil War films ever made, the three-time Oscar winner centers on a privileged Massachusetts son (Matthew Broderick) commanding the first all-black regiment of volunteers in impossible missions against the Confederacy. It’s a film brimming with heart and conflict, beautifully photographed and well acted. Denzel Washington deserved every ounce of that Oscar.
