'The Hurt Locker' writer Mark Boal joins 'Uncharted'

The Uncharted movie is finally starting to come together, and the studio has now hired a pretty talented screenwriter to join the project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mark Boal has been hired to write the Uncharted movie. Boal wrote the 2008 film The Hurt Locker, which won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay as well as Best Picture. He also wrote Zero Dark Thirty, which was nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Uncharted is a very different type of movie for Boal, but the screenwriter is said to be a huge fan of the original game. David Guggenheim (Safe House) wrote the most recent draft of the screenplay, but Boal has been hired for a three-week polish.

Uncharted is based on the popular video game and is being described as an Indiana Jones style swashbuckling adventure. The game centers around Nathan Drake, an explorer who goes on a journey to find the city of El Dorado. The game takes a lot of inspiration from classic adventure films like Indiana Jones, and so the movie will probably feel similar to that.

The film will be directed by Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief), as we previously reported. Gordon said the movie will build on the game's mythology but it won't be following the story exactly, adding in some elements that weren't in the game.

So we have our writer and director, but the movie has still yet to cast its lead of Nathan Drake. Mark Wahlberg was once in talks but has apparently moved on from the project, and Chris Pratt recently turned down the role according to IGN.

The movie will need to cast Nathan Drake soon, as it's set to begin production in early 2015, according to Slashfilm. The film is currently set to release on June 12, 2016.

Video game movie adaptations have had a pretty difficult history, and we really haven't yet seen one that was both a critical and financial success. But the fact that Uncharted has this talent behind it definitely makes it a contender to break that trend.
