While The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part I started off its box office run a little slower than the previous installments, it looks like the film is starting to pick up more steam. The movie is on track to finish the Thanksgiving weekend on top.
Mockingjay I had the lowest opening of the franchise so far, with $123 million last weekend. The film is expected to add another $11.1 million on Thanksgiving Day alone, reports Variety.
By the end of the weekend, Mockingjay I should have an additional $80 million in the bank.
While the film has started slow at home, it has already made $200 million internationally. Since last week, the film has made $370 million globally.
There are two big new movies hitting theaters this weekend: DreamWorks Animation’s Penguins of Madagascar and Warner Bros.’ Horrible Bosses 2.
DWA desperately needs a hit and Penguins should definitely help, but it won’t be the No. 1 movie of the weekend. Box Office Mojo is predicting a $47 million, five-day weekend for the film. It does have to compete with Disney’s Big Hero 6, which will probably add another $25 million over the holiday.
Horrible Bosses 2’s terrible reviews might hurt the film’s chances. It’s expected to debut with under $40 million. The film’s main competition is Dumb and Dumber To, which is sinking fast after starting out strong for Universal.
Oscar bait films The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game are also opening this weekend. Theory is expanding nationwide, while Imitation will only be seen in New York and Los Angeles.
