Texas rancher J.R. Nicholson is a very lucky dog owner. His 4-year-old dog Buddy loves him so much that he hitched a ride on an ambulance when Nicholson was rushed to the hospital recently.

Thankfully, Nicholson’s late October time at a Fredericksburg hospital was short, but the 20-mile ride there was not without incident. According to the San Angelo Standard-Times, Buddy, a Beagle mix, jumped on the back of the ambulance as Mason County EMS took Nicholson, 85, to the hospital.

Tanner Brown, one of the emergency responders, told the paper that they had to stop and make sure Buddy was safe in the vehicle. “We didn’t have anything else to do but to load the dog up and put him in the ambulance and take him to the ER with us,” Brown said.

EMS arrived at Nicholson’s ranch after rand hand Brian Wright called 911, since Nicholson was feeling dizzy. Wright did notice that Buddy had ran off, but didn’t think anything of it, since Buddy usually comes back. Still, he was a bit surprised when he heard that Buddy went to the hospital.

As the Associated Press notes, Wright followed the ambulance and later took Nicholson and Buddy home.

“I was impressed,” Nicholson told the Standard-Times of Buddy. “He didn’t have to go to the hospital with me, but he did.”
