Ryan Gosling fans may have been annoyed that he was passed over for Chris Hemsworth by the editors at People magazine for their 2014 Sexiest Man Alive title, but he was reportedly offered the title and turned them down.
Sources told TheWrap that People had tried to get Gosling to do an interview with the magazine before, especially in 2011, when he starred in Drive. But the actor’s team refused them.
“The consensus was he's too serious for it, too artsy,” the source told the site.
Reps for Gosling didn’t comment, but People’s editorial director told TheWrap that they didn’t consider Gosling this year. Thor star Chris Hemsworth, who took the title, was their one and only choice.
As People’s Sexiest Man Alive, Hemsworth appears on the magazine’s cover and sat down for an interview.
Gosling fans won’t want to hear it, but People is right. 2014 wasn’t Gosling’s year professionally. The actor hasn’t been seen on the big screen since last year’s flop Gangster Squad and Nicolas Winding Refn’s decisive Drive follow-up Only God Forgives. Gosling did make a film with Terrence Malick, but there’s no word on when that will come out.
If TheWrap’s story is true though, we do have to wonder what other honors Gosling would turn down. Would he reject an Oscar?
