Shows change over time, but in the golden days of television, theme songs never did. Sadly, one of the only cool theme songs on TV today, Zooey Deschanel’s “Hey Girl” for Fox’s New Girl is gone. May it rest in peace.
If you saw Tuesday’s episode, titled “Background Check,” you noticed that it began with a different title sequence. It’s much more in line with other titles and just as boring. Yes, it finally includes Coach (Damon Wayans Jr.) and Cece (Hannah Simone), but it’s just a series of stills of the cast, with a more Rock version of “Hey Girl” behind it.
The original titles only had Jess’ original three guy roommates, Winston (Lamorne Morris), Nick (Jake Johnson) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield), with Deschanel singing a She & Him-style version of the song.
As E! News points out, show creator Liz Meriwether already begged fans on Twitter not to get mad at her.
New Girl has changed significantly from the pilot over its three full seasons. Now into its fourth year, the show isn’t just about Jess and one could argue that it even needs a new name. So, the new titles definitely reflect the shift in tone from Jess’ own awkwardness to the awkwardness of all six characters. This past week’s episode was certainly the epitome of that.
It’s just sad that the new title sequence isn’t as unique as the original. But at least it survives on YouTube.
