The makers of the new Peanuts movie have the trouble of bringing to life some of the most iconic cartoon characters ever created, but based on new stills released this week, they appear to be up to the challenge.
Blue Sky Animation, the 20th Century Fox animation studio behind Ice Age, is hard at work on the film, which will be co-produced by Bridesmaids director Paul Feige. The script is a Schulz family affair, with Schulz’ son, Craig Schulz, and grandson, Bryan Schulz, writing it with Cornelius Uliano. The director is Ice Age: Continental Drift’s Steve Martino.
Feig told USA Today that the movie’s plot follows Charlie Brown’s quest for something he thinks he needs, but doesn’t really. Sadly, it’s not called Don’t Give Up, Charlie Brown!, but just The Peanuts Movie.
To make the story fill at least 90 minutes, the filmmakers made sure to give Snoopy plenty of screen time, bringing Snoopy’s Red Baron fantasies alive.
“We really get to go into his mind and see what this crazy dog is imagining every day of his life,” Craig Schulz told USA Today.
Thankfully, the filmmakers aren’t adding to the Peanuts universe, but making use of the rich characters Schulz created. Even Snoopy’s brother Olaf will make an appearance.
“You love being back in that world," Feig told USA Today. "And you immediately want to grab every kid you know and go, 'Oh, my God, you've got to watch this!’”
While a teaser was released in March, USA Today’s images are the first to really show what the film will look like.
The Peanuts Movie hits theaters on Nov. 6, 2015 in 3D.
