Universal has officially climbed aboard the sequel to the 2002 surprise hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding and a director has been hired.
Back in May, original Greek Wedding star Nia Vardalos confirmed that the sequel was in the works. John Corbett is also set to return, with Tom Hanks’ Playtone, HBO and Gold Circle producing.
On Tuesday, Universal agreed to distribute the film domestically and in a few foreign territories, TheWrap reports. Kirk Jones, who last directed What To Expect When You’re Expecting, was also hired to direct.
Individual producers on the film are Rita Wilson, Hanks and Playtone’s Gary Goetzman. Vardalos is among the executive producers, along with Paul Brooks, Scott Niemeyer and Steven Shareshian.
Greek Wedding focused on the Portokalos, who will be brought together by another big fat wedding that will reveal a family secret in the sequel.
The 2002 original was distributed by IFC and is among the most successful indie films ever produced. Made on just a $5 million budget, the movie wound up making $368 million worldwide.
