After the huge success of The Lego Movie, Lego Batman is getting his own movie, and it's sounding like it has potential to be just as funny and self-aware.
In an interview with Empire Online, Phil Lord and Chris Miller discussed the upcoming Lego Batman movie and said it will pay homage to nearly every version of Batman's story.
"Rest assured that every era of Batman filmmaking will be acknowledged," said Chris Miller. "There have been so many interpretations of Batman and there is so much to play with there. There are 40 versions of his origin story alone."
This opens up a lot of awesome possibilities for Lego Batman, and it's not quite clear how the movie will acknowledge all these different eras. One possibility is to have the main Batman from The Lego Movie encounter other versions of himself, such as one from the original Adam West TV show, the George Clooney version, the Christian Bale version, etc. Of course this begs the question of if when Lord and Miller say "every era" they're including the upcoming Batman v. Superman version, as Lego Batman will be released a year after that film.
There's also the possibility which CinemaBlend proposed of different Batman worlds for the movie to explore, the same way The Lego Movie explored a bunch of different Lego worlds.
Either way, it sounds like Lego Batman will be a pretty fun tribute to all of the different versions of Batman we've seen and it could be just as funny and meta as The Lego Movie was.
Lord and Miller also talked overall about the upcoming Lego franchise, which in addition to Lego Batman will also include Ninjago. They said that each of the movies will have their own distinct tone while still taking place in the Lego Movie universe, kind of like how Marvel spins off its characters into different movies and then has them come back together (in this case with the eventual Lego Movie 2.)
The Lego Movie opened earlier this year and was a pretty big success, grossing $468 million worldwide on a $60 million budget. It was also a pretty big critical success, surprising a lot of people with just how creative and funny it was for both kids and adults.
Lego Batman will star Will Arnett as Batman, reprising his role from The Lego Movie. It will be directed by Chris McKay and written by Seth Grahame-Smith. Phil Lord and Chris Miller will produce the film. It's currently set to release in 2017.
