Idris Elba must have been so excited about Luther getting an American remake that he decided he wanted another chance to play the character that made him an international star.
BBC America announced today that Elba will play DCI John Luther, a murder detective with his own set of rules, once again in a two-episode revival. The new episodes will be filmed in March on location in London, then will premiere in the U.S. later in the year.
Neil Cross, who created the series, will return to write. He said in a statement that he is very excited to return to the character.
“Ever since we said goodbye to John Luther on Southwark Bridge, there’s hardly been a minute when I didn’t wonder what happened next,” Cross said. “So I decided to find out. We’re putting the band back together; Luther is coming back where he belongs. Back to the BBC. Back to London. And back to work.”
The news comes just a day after it was confirmed that Fox has ordered an American Luther remake, which will be produced by Elba, BBC Worldwide Productions and Chernin Entertainment. Cross is onboard to write and executive produce as well.
Elba has been acting since the mid-’90s, but Luther really put him on the map, earning him a Golden Globe in 2012. The series only ran three seasons from 2010 to 2013. Elba’s other credits include The Wire, Thor, Pacific Rim and Prometheus. He’s also expected to make an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
