Jon Stewart failed to make it clear that he was joking on CNN earlier Tuesday when he suggested that he wasn’t voting, so he opened last night’s special live Daily Show with an apology.
During an interview with CNN’s Christiane Amanpur earlier in the day, Stewart said that he wasn’t voting.
“I just moved. I don’t even know where my thing is now,” he said.
A shocked Amanpour asked, “What do you mean?”
“I moved to a different state,” he replied. When asked what state he moved to, Stewart said he couldn’t divulge.
Between the interview and 11 p.m. last night, stewart was blasted for the comment. Considering how he covers politics on The Daily Show, it seemed strange for him to feel so nonchalant about voting.
Since Stewart did a live show to react on the election results, he was able to immediately respond to critics on the show.
“I want to apologize because I shouldn’t have been flip about that,” he said. “Because I think I wasn’t clear enough that I was kidding and it sent a message that I didn’t think voting was important or that I didn’t think it was a big issue.”
He said that he did vote and, again, added that he shouldn’t have been flip. “That was stupid,” he said.
