Bill Cosby is a beloved comedy legend, but comedian Hannibal Buress, who was recently hired to voice a character in Angry Birds, had some harsh words for the sitcom dad.
In a standup set over the weekend, Buress took Cosby to task, saying that the Cosby Show star “has the f***ing smuggest old black man public persona that I hate,” notes TheWrap. But that was just the beginning of his rant.
“‘Pull your pants up, black people. I was on TV in the '80s. I can talk down to you because I had a successful sitcom.’ Yeah, but you raped women, Bill Cosby,” Buress said. “So, brings you down a couple notches. I don't curse on stage. But yeah, you're a rapist.”
Buress is referring to a 2006 case that Cosby settled with a woman who claimed she was sexually assaulted and abused by Cosby in Philadelphia. The case earned new attention in February, as Cosby began working on a new NBC show. Dylan Farrow’s sexual abuse allegations against Woody Allen were also back in the news at the time.
Buress later told his audience to watch Cosby Show reruns, adding, “If you don't know about it, trust me. When you leave here, Google ‘Bill Cosby rape.’ That s**t has more results than Hannibal Buress.”
The comedian was recently seen in Neighbors with Zac Efron and will voice a character in Sony’s Angry Birds movie. He did comment on the controversy his remarks have started in an interview with USA Today.
“You just have to say what you want to say sometimes and make sure you don’t say anything racist or homophobic or misogynistic,” Buress said. “That’s the thing — you’ve got to really watch what you say these days.”
