Christopher Nolan's 'Interstellar' fails to reach $50 million in box office final numbers

While initial estimates put Interstellar at a decent $50 million launch this past weekend, it turns out that Christopher Nolan’s ambitious sci-fi epic actually fell short of that number.

The final three-day total for the film was just $47.5 million. Add in Wednesday and Thursday and the movie is still shy of $50 million, with a $49.7 million total.

As The Hollywood Reporter notes, the film did do well overseas, so its global total is $133.6 million.

Interstellar may have been hampered a bit by the mixed reviews, plus its 170-minute runtime. It also had to face Disney’s latest film, Big Hero 6, which reeled in $56 million thanks to families coming out in big numbers.

The only good news on the horizon for Paramount, Warner Bros. and Nolan is that Interstellar will get a long run in IMAX theaters. TheWrap reported that Interstellar smashed the global opening weekend record for an IMAX movie with $20.6 million, so IMAX will continue to keep the film in circulation in the format. That means that The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 will not be screened in IMAX when it opens on Nov. 21.

Interstellar stars Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. It’s Nolan’s first film since The Dark Knight Rises.
