Christopher Nolan has been very open about the making of Interstellar, even now after the film has been seen by audiences. Now, he’s had to explain the thought process behind the film’s sound design, which came under critique when the movie came out earlier this month.
Several critics complained that the sound mixing and design had made it difficult to hear some dialogue. Some thought it might have been an issue at movie theaters or that maybe the sound issue was exclusive to IMAX. Others blamed Nolan for the poor mixing.
In reality, the fault really does go on Nolan. He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that the sound design was considered part of the creative process. He worked hard with composer Hans Zimmer, re-recording mixers Gary Rizzo and Gregg Landaker and sound designer Richard King.
“We made carefully considered creative decisions,,” Nolan explained. “There are particular moments in this film where I decided to use dialogue as a sound effect, so sometimes it’s mixed slightly underneath the other sound effects or in the other sound effects to emphasize how loud the surrounding noise is. It’s not that nobody has ever done these things before, but it's a little unconventional for a Hollywood movie”
Essentially, Nolan decided that in some scenes, the audience needed feel embedded with the characters, particularly in the moment where Matthew McConaughey is driving through a cornfield. He wants to have the audience not only see what McConaughey sees, but hear as well.
Nolan has also explained other aspects of the film that critics have complained about, which appears to be highlighting just how mixed the response has been to the nearly three-hour epic. In an interview with The Daily Beast for example, Nolan said he is “very aware of the plot holes in my films and very aware of when people spot them, but they generally don’t.” Back in March, he also explained why he didn’t shoot the film in 3D.
