After the crazy time travel of Days of Future Past, we've been waiting anxiously to hear more about where the X-Men series is going with Apocalypse. Apparently, this next movie will be playing up the romance more than we might have expected.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, X-Men: Apocalypse will feature romance between Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) and Magneto (Michael Fassbender). In fact, the movie is apparently being crafted around Mystique and Magneto, taking advantage of the star power of both actors.
Is this a good thing for the X-Men franchise? It's kind of hard to say. Jennifer Lawrence and Michael Fassbender are definitely two of the best actors in the new franchise, and moving their relationship into a full-fledged romance could be pretty interesting, but the fact that the movie is apparently being crafted around this is kind of concerning. Should an X-Men movie be written around a romantic storyline? The previously two X-Men movies have emphasized Charles Xavier, Mystique and Magneto the most, so it makes sense to keep them front and center, but do we need an actual romance thrown in here?
Writer Simon Kinberg has also previously said that Apocalypse would play up the romance between Mystique and Beast, according to Screen Rant. So either something has changed since then or Apocalypse will feature a Mystique/Magneto/Beast love triangle, and that would probably be pretty terrible.
X-Men: Apocalypse will be the end of the trilogy which began with First Class and conclude the storylines of the young versions of these characters, according to Slashfilm.
The previous X-Men film, Days of Future Past, opened earlier this year and was a huge success, grossing $746 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo. This made it the highest grossing X-Men movie by far, with X-Men: First Class grossing only $353 million worldwide. Though Apocalypse is expected to be the end of this trilogy, it's pretty safe to say it won't be the end of X-Men, though the future of the franchise after this new movie is pretty unclear.
X-men: Apocalypse is set to release on May 27, 2016.
