American Sniper is an upcoming film based on a true story and book of the same name. The film stars Bradley Cooper, who gained 40 pounds in order to accurately portray the real life sniper and author of the book, Chris Kyle.
Before Kyle was shockingly murdered at a shooting range in 2013, Kyle served in the military and became known as one of the deadliest snipers in American history with 160 confirmed kills, the Washington Post noted. Kyle wrote the novel American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History, which recounts his history in the military and details his time spent in the Iraq War.
Starring the Academy Award nominated Cooper and directed by Clint Eastwood, the film has high expectations for success. Cooper talked about his dedication to honoring the record holding sniper's legacy and in preparation for the part, he gained weight so he could look more muscular like Kyle.
"I had to do right by him and his family, there was really no choice. You're sitting across the dining-room table talking to this person's father and mother. And his children and wife are there. And he's passed away," Cooper told USA Today. "Knowing that they are putting all of their stories in your hands and the responsibly of that, it's actually unique."
Scott McEwen was one of Kyle's close friends and is one of the co-authors of American Sniper. He told SOFREP that he was happy with the choice of the creative team for the film.
"I think Clint was the perfect person to do the movie, and was Chris’ and my choice from day one when we took the project to Andrew Lazar," McEwen said. "Spielberg is an Icon for sure; Eastwood is a Legend. I was elated when Clint agreed to direct the movie."
