Interview with Clark Gregg
TCC: As Coulson's condition worsens, how will you tap into that mental state as an actor?
Clark Gregg: You mean when he starts to really go bonkers because of the alien blood in him that makes him kind of alienated and psycho? Let's just say it's not something that's difficult to summon. I try to get some sympathy from my wife and I go listen, he's really going around the bend now, he's becoming a full on crazy psycho, and she goes, "Oh, good, are they gonna pay you the same because you won't have to act as much." [Laughs]
TCC: What's keeping Coulson optimistic about defeating Hydra?
CG: Well, you know Agent May said in the last episode, you're pretty happy aren't you and I say why do you think I'm happy, and she said "because we're surrounded, we're outgunned and we're probably never going to get out of this, and that's just when you're the happiest."
I think there's an element of that, you know, he's comfortable, in a way more comfortable being an underdog than they ever were kind of being the faceless part of S.H.I.E.L.D. when he wasn't really sure what was going on and why some of the pieces weren't adding up. Now he knows why the pieces weren't adding up, S.H.I.E.L.D was rotten and even though it seems like the odds are against them, it's a very clear task and it's fun to be the underdog.
Interview with Jeph Loeb
TCC: How is everyone handling any pressure there might be to make this season top last season?
Jeph Loeb: Well, look that's a challenge on every television series, you're always going to be looking to try to tell stories that continue the excitement that people get caught up in, the urgency, the momentum, all those things and it really is our goal, and we've [tried] — you know, our incredible writing staff and our show runners, Jeff Bell and Joss Whedon and Maurissa [Tancharoen], we take time talking all the time about how do we maintain the momentum and the urgency of things that we have done in the past and really making the show where every single time you finish an episode, you go, "I didn't expect that."
And I think we've really kind of entered that place right now, particularly now where television so much is whether or not people watch it that night or they DVR it or watch it in some other way, we want to become that show that you've got to watch that night because it's what people are going to be talking about tomorrow."
