Rumors of a sequel to the 2001 hit Zoolander have been around for years, and according to Will Ferrell himself, the movie seems to be finally, really happening.
In an interview with JoBlo, Ferrell said that a read through of the script for Zoolander 2 is happening soon and that his character, Mugatu, is involved in the sequel. The fact that Ferrell is pretty sure a read through is on the horizon suggests that the script is either completely finished or very nearly finished. This is the closest the movie has come to looking like it might finally be made.
According to Slashfilm, as of last December, Ben Stiller was saying that the project was on hold, but then in June, he said that a script rewrite was actively being worked on again.
Last month, Justin Theroux said that there was a script for the sequel that was being sharpened, and that he had been meeting with Stiller while in New York shooting The Leftovers to discuss the movie, according to Vulture.
In terms of plot, according to Slashfilm, Stiller has said that the movie would be about how quickly the fashion world moves, beginning with everyone having moved on from Derek and Hansel. The film would then revolve around them trying to reinvent themselves for modern times.
The original Zoolander was released in 2001. It wasn't a huge hit at the box office, making only $45 million domestically according to Box Office Mojo.
However, it became something of a cult hit after the fact on DVD, and has become one of those movies that people still quote a decade later.
But what fans of the original movie have to wonder is, after the mixed fan reception of sequels to other cult comedy hits like Anchorman, is a sequel really worth it? Or should the original be left alone?
