Top 10 inspiring celebrities with mental illnesses

3. Herschel Walker – Dissociative Identity Disorder

Pro football player and winner of the 1982 Heisman Award, Herschel Walker, is perhaps the type of man many young boys long to become. Other notable achievements include being an Olympic Torchbearer and becoming an advocate for those with DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder).

This illness, known previously as multiple personality disorder, made his life difficult from a young age. Reported by CNN, he did not realize the diagnosis until adulthood: “My life was out of control. I was not happy, I was very sad, I was angry and I didn't understand why."

Even after realizing his illness, Walker sometimes struggled to believe it. "It is hard to accept a mental illness," he told the U.S. Army representatives while talking to soldiers. Being open instead of hiding has helped him to reach others and remind them that they are not alone. His book, Breaking Free: My Life with Dissociative Identity Disorder, chronicles his story and also has helped end the stigma of mental illness for athletes.
