Top 10 inspiring celebrities with mental illnesses

4. J.K. Rowling – Depression

Without the creativity of J.K. Rowling, the Harry Potter books and movies would not be enjoyed. Millions of children grew up longing to join in on these magical adventures.

Writing these novels helped Rowling out of a difficult place in her life. After separating from her husband in her mid-twenties, the author felt extremely depressed and even suicidal. At first, medical personnel did not take her seriously despite her mental illness. “We’re talking suicidal thoughts here, we’re not talking ‘I’m a little bit miserable,’ she told Fox News.

After going through therapy while writing her first novel, Rowling became an advocate for those with mental health problems in hopes to end the stigma. Demands after her fame caused her to return to treatment after the last Harry Potter book, according to the Daily Mail. Refusing to be embarrassed, she remains honest and hopeful about her struggles. ABC reported her telling the London Times, “What's to be ashamed of? I went through a really rough time, and I am quite proud that I got out of that.”
