5. Buzz Aldrin – Alcoholism and Depression
One of the three famous astronauts on Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin, walked on the moon after Neil Armstrong in 1969. This amazing event made him a hero and explorer who will be remembered for ages.
Fame, however, proved difficult. The pressure of being in the public eye caused Aldrin to self-medicate with alcohol which in turn worsened his depression. According to Psychology Today, he remembered, “What I felt was depression. . . I really had no future plans after returning from the moon. So I had to reexamine my life.”
Instead of dwelling in this dark period of life, Aldrin decided to receive treatment. He told National Geographic he needed to make a choice: “Do you continue to descend into an abyss? Or do you try to make a difference with what you know best?" His openness about this struggle since then has inspired others in similar situations.
