Top 10 inspiring celebrities with mental illnesses

6. Winona Ryder – Depression and Anxiety

Starring in numerous films, Winona Ryder has proved herself a talented actress. Her roles have been versatile from tomboy Jo March in Little Woman to sweet Kim in Edward Scissorhands to the emotionally-unstable, retiring ballerina Beth in Black Swan.

However, all of her success did not lead to happiness. Anxiety and depression plagued her especially after publicized breakups with celebrities such as Johnny Depp. The pressure of being in the public eye added to her stress. According to Highly Sensitive and Creative, Ryder stated, “I was exhausted and going through a terrible depression. I had had panic attacks from the age of 12 – probably from the pressure of working and then going through adolescence onscreen.”

Yet, Ryder has continued to stay strong and remain optimistic about the future despite her struggles. Hoping to help others, she has starred in films about mental illness such as Girl Interrupted. Archived by WinonaRdyer.org, an interview with Daily Bruin Online captured her thoughts about that film: “I hope the teenagers who feel alone out there will see this movie and say, ‘Thank God.’. . .If I had seen this movie at 19, I would have taken a lot of comfort in it.”
