Champion swimmer Michael Phelps has won the most Olympic medals of any athlete ever. Yet, the self-control and discipline that he had to learn did not come easily at first.
School was a struggle for him as a child. At the age of 9, Phelps was diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Debbie Phelps, his mother, told ADDitude that “his diagnosis made me want to prove everyone wrong. I knew that, if I collaborated with Michael, he could achieve anything he set his mind to.”
Debbie has become an advocate for children who suffer from ADHD. She praises her son for his ability to pursue his dreams even with his disorder. “Now Michael manages with physical training and behavior modification, [using] the tools he learned at a young age. Michael has a mental toughness,” she stated, according to Everyday Health.
