2. Brooke Shields - Postpartum Depression
Actress and model Brooke Shields is known partly for her beautiful smile and dramatic roles. As a baby, she began modeling products and then started acting in films with her lead role in the controversial Pretty Baby.
Depression did not set in until after Shields had her daughter Rowan Frances. After this, the actress experienced severe postpartum depression. This left her unable to care for her child and feeling suicidal. According to People, "I was incapable of holding or looking at or kissing or smelling my perfect tiny little baby. . .I'd hide in the shower in a fetal position—and put the hot water on and hope it would melt me away."
Even in the darkness, Shields still found hope. WebMD reported her saying, “There was always a glimmer of something that kept me trying to get better.” Receiving treatment and taking anti-depressants helped her to recover. Since then, Shields has spoken out about postpartum depression and other mental illness as well as writing about her journey in the book Down Came the Rain: My Journey through Postpartum Depression and winning an advocacy award from Hope for Depression.
