5. Frank Hardy and Nancy Drew from The Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew
Both of these characters have been in committed relationships for years. Nancy Drew is often seen with her loyal boyfriend Ned Nickerson. Although not paired together quite as much, Frank Hardy and sweet Callie Bradshow usually are dating too.
Yet, in every crossover book between the Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew, the older brother falls for the spunky detective. Both remain true to their partner but yearn for someone with a similarly clever brain, fast wit and sense of adventure. In several books, they end up kissing or another romantic situation but always blame it on approaching death or mistaken feelings. For example, in Double Crossing found on MysteryNet, Nancy has to remind herself to not think romantically about anyone on the cruise ship: “She'd crossed paths with Frank and his brother before, and every time she did, Frank had the same powerful effect on her. Nothing had ever happened between them, though, and it wasn't going to this time, either. She had a boyfriend, he had a girlfriend -- and that was that.”
Fans have not taken the detectives’ excuses for an answer, however. One reviewer on the Amazon page for Secrets of the Nile (Nancy Drew and Hardy Boys Super Mysteries #25 stated, “They are meant to be . They shouldn’t have left each other! They should’ve stayed together!” Despite both characters’ significant others, most fans agree that Frank and Nancy would complement one another perfectly.
