In this classic 80s film, Andie ends up with a popular but sweet guy named Blaine. Her friend Duckie, who was secretly in love with her the whole time, returns to be by her side although she loves someone else. Sure, the screenwriters have him bump into a new girl, but that did not leave fans satisfied. Many argued that Duckie and Andie should have gotten together.
According to Spin Off Online, these two friends were originally supposed to end as a couple. The Tamp Bay Times reported an earlier ending to the script. It finishes with this stage direction: “ANDIE AND DUCKIE: They look at each other and smile. Duckie laughs. Andie squeezes him tight and lifts him off his feet.”
Even the director, Howard Deutch, disliked Blaine and Andie together. “I thought the new ending was heartbreaking. Heartbreaking. I thought it was unfair and wrong, and that’s not what the movie was intended to be,” he stated, according to Spin Off Online. Many fans feel the same way.
