Transformers: Age of Extinction managed to hold off new release Tammy for the Fourth of July box office.
The latest Michael Bay explosion-fest featuring Transformers pulled in $10.6 million on the film's second Friday. The box office is likely to be quiet for the holiday weekend, with holdover Transformers 4 projected to earn about $40 million, Forbes reports, inching its way to the $200 million mark.
Melissa McCarthy's Tammy grossed $6.44 million to snag second place, bringing the film's opening total to $18.1 million so far. The poorly-reviewed comedy will earn close to $20 million on the weekend. Not an impressive haul, but will be enough to make the film surpass its low budget.
Other new releases of the weekend struggled to gain much of a foothold at the box office, with Earth to Echo leading the straggling pack with $2.6 million on Friday. The family friendly film from Disney has earned $7.7 million already and is projected to add $15 million to that total through the weekend.
Screen Gems' horror film Deliver Us From Evil earned $2.5 million, and might gross $14 million for the weekend.
The latest film from Dinesh d'Souza, the documentary-ish film America expanded and grossed $1 million. The film is expected to gross a decent $4.5 million for the weekend.
The Keira Knightley-Mark Ruffalo film Begin Again earned $425,000 through 175 theaters on Friday and likely will earn $2 million through five days.
