10. “Words”, Missing Persons. (1982). Written by Dale Bozzio and Warren Cuccurullo.
The spare first four notes (“Do you hear me?”) make about as efficient use of 4 pitches as ever happened in a pop song. Unexpected and brilliant. What songwriter today would not overcrowd the opening line of this song with far more, and far more predictable, melodic masturbatory noo-dling? After that, the repeated ascending lines (“My lips are moving…”) fit perfectly with the song’s needs. The chorus is again as memorable as they come, its most satisfying moment coming at the end, when it repeats the phrase of “when no one listens” a whole-step lower “no use talking” in order to get the song back into the original key from which it had deviated. It fits like a glove. Like “Major Tom,” this song is one of the cornerstones that defined an entire melodic writing style within the new wave genre.
