1. Bully (Season 1, Episode 9)
"Bully" is a perfect episode of television. In one of the most uncomfortable scenes you will ever see, Louie is emasculated in front of a date by a high school jock. Dejected and angry, Louie stalks the kid. But it doesn't go where you think it might. Rather than confront the kid, Louie follows him all the way to his house, where he confronts his parents. When the boy's father starts screaming at and hitting his son, Louie quickly learns where the boy's behavior comes from. It's rare to see a bully conveyed on screen as a victim rather than just a heartless monster looking to inflict pain on others. And the father isn't the bad guy either. Louie bonds with him and sees he's just a guy doing the best he can, like so many of us are. That's what makes Louie such a special show. At its best, it's all about the human experience. Sometimes it's ugly, sometimes it's sad, sometimes it's joyous, sometimes it's beautiful, and many times it's all of those things at once.
