4. Lolita
Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita is first mentioned in season 2, episode 18, when Hanna admits to Spencer that she stole Ali’s copy of the novel out of curiosity. However, references to the story keep reappearing multiple times after that. In season 3, episode 1, Mona has a vision of Ali while in Radley and she’s wearing her red coat reading the novel. Additionally, Ali’s alias “Vivian Darkbloom” is an anagram of “Vladimir Nabokov.” The Lolita reference could be indicative of the N.A.T. club’s obsession with Alison and her friends, but it seems more applicable to Ezra’s relationship with Ali, and later, Aria. After all, Lolita is focused around an English professor and his attraction to a young girl.
