Who could forget this awkward yet oh so entertaining scene from season 1, episode 2, where Aria and Ezra run into each other at the movies? The theater is screening It Happened One Night, admittedly a favorite flick of both the forbidden lovers. But what’s a film about an unlikely couple who run away together have to do with PLL? If we’re talking about Aria and Ezra’s relationship specifically, everything. The parallel not only represents the night they first met, but also becomes a symbol of their eventually rekindled romance (Aria and Ezra are often seen watching old films together during most PLL episodes). Additionally, the parallel could also be extended to represent the night of Ali’s “disappearance.” Season 3, episode 1 is also not so coincidentally titled, “It Happened That Night,” a seemingly spoof of the original.
