10. Paradise Lost
Bibliophiles who enjoy John Milton’s works will appreciate the Pretty Little Liars writers’ tribute to “Paradise Lost” in this scene from season 5, episode 2. The epic poem looks at Adam and Eve’s “fall from grace,” but with a twist, which makes it a perfect pick for Aria, the budding writer. In the beginning of this clip, Aria is reading Milton’s famous piece as a way to forget the events that took place in New York, though the attempt is short lived. The connection is very obvious — Milton’s poem is a parallel to Aria’s own “fall from grace” after killing Shana — and the tie-in is extremely clever.
