3. Oberyon Martell
YOU RAPED HER. YOU MURDERED HER. YOU KILLED HER CHILDREN.
Oberyon Martell just why couldn’t you have stabbed the Mountain one more time when you had the chance and done your speech after he was dead?!
The glory of Oberyon Martell was he came to Kings Landing with the pure purpose to avenge his sister and her childrens death. He didn’t want the Throne. He didn’t want to cause trouble. He only wanted to enjoy life and seek his revenge. Simple? Sure. Easy? No.
Even though he was only in season 4 he quickly worked his way into fans hearts with his quick wit and dashing fashion sense. He first arrived to be the representative of House Martell at the wedding of Joffrey and Margaery. He eventually serves as a judge on Tyrion’s trial and is intrigued when Tyrion demands for a trial by combat. It is days later after he find out that The Mountain would be fighting on behalf of Cersei Lannister, that he offers his fighting services on behalf of Tyrion.
During combat, Oberyon makes his case known as to why he is fighting and when at first he seems he is going to lose, he gets a lucky swing and takes the Mountain down. It looked like Oberyon was going to win this round and save Tyrions life but while his opponent is down is when Oberyon decides to begin his soliloquy on how he cannot die yet because he has yet to confess. Fans are screaming for him to finish the job but he continues to saunter around the large man until all of a sudden, the Mountain comes back with vengeance and pins Oberyon to the ground.
He begins to crush Oberyon’s skull as he confesses to his crimes and then, just when no one wants to look any more but can not turn away, he destroys him and Oberyon Martell is dead.
Fans are screaming in horror, Tyrion is crying on the inside, and everyone is wishing Oberyon had worn a darn helmet. We learned from this episode that whenever a character says, “Today is not the day I die,” never believe it.
Oberyon gets the title of #3 due to the horror of his death and the tragedy that all he wanted was for the Mountain to confess and while he did achieve that, it cost him his life.
Oberyon Martell, we miss you.
