'Game of Thrones' most gruesome and horrifying deaths

5. Khal Drogo

Moon of my life, my sun and stars, your death broke my heart. The relationship between Daenerys and Khal Drogo was never simple and it definitely took time to develop but once it did, it was beautiful and something special. The history of the Dothraki is that the longer their hair, the more successes they have had in battle. And Khal Drogo had a full head of hair.

Khal Drogo went through a lot of strife the moment he married Daenerys and was even abandoned by all his men once he became too injured to continue on as the Khal. Following the invasion of a city, he was challenged by another Khal who believed Drogo should no longer remain in charge because he may have been taking orders from a woman, and even if it was his wife that it still viewed as unacceptable.

Following the fight, Drogo is found to be ill as he has a scratch on his chest and is then treated by the witch who Daenerys saved. Despite her treatment, his wound worsens and Daenerys asks the witch once more what can be done to save the father of her child. The witch suggests blood magic but warns Dani that it comes at a price as only life can come from death. Desperate to save him, Dani allows the magic to be done and his horse is slain. Daenerys gets a scolding from her advisor Ser Jorah as the rest of the Dothraki watch in horror.

Khal Drogo gets the #5 spot because before he died, he was already dead. Following the incantation, Drogo is in a coma and looks like what someone would look like had they just gotten their soul sucked out by a Dementor in the Harry Potter universe. As well, Daenerys’ baby is dead. When confronted, the witch confesses she sabotaged the soon to be family as the Dothraki raped and killed her family. Daenerys, unable to keep her husband in his state, suffocates him with a pillow and puts him to rest.

Later on that night, she has a burial for her Drogo and lays her dragon eggs, a gift on her wedding day, with her husband and then also ties the witch to a stake to burn her to death. Daenerys lights everyone on fire and as she hears the witch scream; she herself walks into the fire to join her beloved.

His death is tied to the death of Khalessi’s child and the death of her family that makes it more tragic than originally planned. In addition Daenerys then lost the support of what should have been her people but as her husband is dead, he is no longer the Khal, making her no longer a Queen.

Khal Drogo, we miss you all the time. All you wanted was to help your family re-claim the throne they deserved.
