8. Ygritte
Ygritte was easily a fan favorite from the first time she defied Jon Snow and reminded viewers that not all women in this universe are willing to follow a man blindly until their death.
Ygritte was a member of the Free Folk and a member of Mance Rayder’s army. She was first captured by Jon Snow and then was ordered to be executed but when Snow failed to do so, she escaped causing a chase between the two. The pair spent a vast amount of time together and viewers quickly grew attached to their coupling. Ygritte also made sure that when Jon Snow abandoned his post at the Wall by taking his virginity. Their moment together occurred in a small cave that following their coitus, they relaxed in a hot water springs. It was there that it became clear to fans that their relationship was more than just physical attraction and could never be due to their origins. Ygritte realized this herself as she told Jon Snow that she wished they never had to leave the cave so they could be together forever.
After Jon Snow left the Free Folk to return to the wall, Ygritte turned angry at Snow and even shot three arrows into his shoulder as he rode off. For a full season she swore she would be the one to kill him and no one else was to touch him. The two first saw each other in season 4 during the battle of the Wall. Ygritte was ready to strike and had her arrow prepped to shoot Snow but hesitated for a moment, proving she truly could not kill him because she loved him, and in that hesitation she was shot by someone else.
Jon Snow quickly ran over to her and held her as she died. In her final moments she told Jon they should have never left the cave and Jon telling her that they will go back. In return Ygritte, out of breath whispers, “You know nothing, Jon Snow” which is a line she said often to the man and then passed away.
Ygritte takes #8 for her complex relationship with Jon Snow and due to the fact that she was such a terrific fighter, no one expected her to die for a long time. Plus she died in her lovers arms and that in itself is pure tragedy.
