2. The Red Wedding - Catelyn, Robb and Talisa Stark
I know what you might be thinking – how could this only be #2? I have my reasons, I promise.
But yes, the Red Wedding. The most gruesome, horrifying and shocking death scene of Game of Thrones history. Catelyn and Robb Stark run off to stick together in hopes of finding the rest of their family and end up becoming a larger part of the war than they expected when Robb is appointed King of the North. And the Robb falls in love with Talisa and the two marry despite the promise made to House Frey that he would marry one of Lord Walder Frey’s daughters.
Where do I begin about the tragedy and disgustingness that is the Red Wedding? It all goes downhill when the doors are shut after the newly wed couple of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey leave to go consummate their marriage, and then the Rains of Castamere begin to play.
It all happens so fast that Lord Frey announces to Robb that he has not given his new wife a proper gift when Catelyn realizes what is happening and shouts for Robb to run. All of a sudden Talisa’s is being stabbed in the stomach multiple times, killing her and her unborn child as Robb is shot with arrows and his men are attacked. The band turns out to be assassins as they attack everyone who followed Stark, ending the Northern Rebellion. They even kill Robb’s dire wolf. In a hope to save his sons life, Cateyln Stark swears she will slit Lord Frey’s wife’s throat but he does not care, causing another guard to stab Robb one final time with the message, “The Lannisters send their regards.” Catelyn Stark breaks down and releases Frey’s wife and then her own throat is slit. In less than five minutes three Starks are brutally murdered and it remains to be one of the most horrifying and upsetting scenes to watch. Just re-watching it now for the sake of writing this post had me close to tears.
To make matters even worse, Arya Stark is right outside the wedding, hoping she will finally be reunited with her mother and brother that evening but quickly realizes something is not going according to plan as she watches guards shoot Robb’s direwolf. Arya starts to move towards the scene when the Hound finds her and informs her that, “it is too late,” before knocking her out and gets her out of harms way. Poor Arya Stark has now lost her father, mother, brother, sister-in-law and unborn niece or nephew. Plus she has been at both of the scenes when their death occurred.
The Red Wedding gets the slot of #2 just for the pure shock and horror that still makes people shudder when they think about it.
