Many people didn’t know what to think when the video for this came out. Who was this guy in purple? The introduction of Prince to the MTV generation, way back when MTV actually played music, was the video for the funky dance party anthem “1999”. Released in 1982, of course, it made a resurgence as the song to play on New Year’s Eve going into the new millennium.
